Howorth’s Shoes is a business with a long tradition of providing excellent footwear and great customer service. It is led by Liz Presswell, her husband Graeme and their son, Luke. Liz has spent over 40 years in the footwear business, first working as a ‘Saturday girl’ at Howorth’s in Biggleswade, and now as joint owner. Graeme joined the business in 2000 and then Luke in 2009.
The family connection with the business goes back to 1946 when Liz’s father, Fred Wheatley, joined the established business just after the end of Second World War where he served with the Royal Signals. In 1946 he completed his training as a fitter for Start-Rite shoes (whose advertising campaign in the 1940's declared that ‘children's shoes have far to go’), and so started a long-standing family connection with the business. Today, Howorth’s Shoes maintains that tradition of excellence under the direction of Liz, Graeme and Luke.
Liz is a past President of the Society of Shoe Fitters, an organisation dedicated to the training of independent shoe fitters, so it’s not surprising that one of the abiding principles of the business is that we only sell good quality footwear. Liz and all our team take this aspect very seriously, visiting trade shows and suppliers to choose the best products for the business. We only deal with companies with a similar approach to customer care and who manufacture footwear of the highest quality.
We pride ourselves on that quality, both in the range of our footwear we sell and the service we provide our customers. We aim to give excellent advice about both fit and design, helping you to find shoes that support, protect and look great. Due the knowledge and experience we have and the fact that we treat people as individuals, with care and attention, we find that many customers return to us year after year.
As well as our bricks and mortar shop in Mill Street, Bedford, we sell right here on our website. So whether it's in person or online, there’s plenty of opportunity for you to buy the footwear that suits you, that fits and that will continue to look good for years to come from the Howorth's team.
